Today's Reflection

Jesus teaches us to call God, our Father. God is our Father; we are his children. Our prayer must be that of a child marked with joy, love,...

Thought of the day

All of us have high moments and low moments; dramatic moments of being on the top of the mountain and also depressing moments of being down in the valley. Today's gospel recounts a top of the mountain experience for Peter, James and John as they see Jesus transfigured. Jesus takes the three disciples with him and leads them up a high mountain. Top of the mountain experiences are never self-generated but gifted. We cannot cause but only receive them. Jesus takes the three up a high mountain where they could be alone. A certain climate of silence and solitude is necessary if we are to behold Jesus.

Jesus is transfigured, a privileged experience. Peter ruins it all by saying: "Lord, it is wonderful for us to be here. If you wish I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." Poor Peter! He did not know that at times it is best to be quiet. There is a time to be silent and a time to speak; a time for contemplation and a time for action. Where was the need for three tents? Just one would have been enough! At times we are like Peter. Are we not? When the Lord gives us moments of deep intimacy and ecstasy instead of resting in and relishing them we want to be up and doing!
